I am greatful to the neighbor who was thoughtful enough to put in an unsecured wireless router... I am a realtor and so Sunday is my big work day. This is the day where I do open houses so that I can meet new prospects. Today I am in a country home situated on five acres. This is the most peaceful time of the week. No kids, no stress, just sit back and listen to the silence of someone's empty home. It is my sacred time. This house has a gorgeous oak tree out front. There is a white front porch with a rocking chair, a complete and utter picture of serenity. Whenever I see a car come down the gravel road I almost pray that it doesn't stop... (they might just eat these brownies I have baked, then there will be nothing left for me!) I wonder where other parents find their most peaceful times. Especially, those of you who are teachers-there must be constant noise in your world. Does anyone else feel like they are in a marathon sprint too? As good as progress is, and as much more we can accomplish by multi-tasking, I have to admit I miss some of the quiet calm laziness of my childhood-- but heck that is what retirement is for, no?

Your post with that picture has made me long for the day when my husband and I can settle in a house like that on 5 acres. The older I get the more I feel as though that is a dream that will continually stay out of our grasp. But alas, although I may not be blessed with a country home on property, I have many other blessings in my life. Thanks for reminding me of that in a roundabout way.
I think that technology has been both a curse and a blessing in terms of how we spend our time. My brother is a lawyer and when he is back home on "vacation" he is glued to his Blackberry 24x7. That technology has made it possible for him to work anywhere, which makes it impossible to truly relax and take a vacation. We are able to work faster and smarter, but as a side effect I think that we work much longer and harder than in the "good old days."
I have to agree with you, my good friend constantly revels at the fact that I never fully disengage from my work activities. My cell phone always rings, I spend more time in front of my laptop then I sleep, I genuinely don't know what I would do if I just sat still! I went on a cruise about two years ago and it was fabulous. No cell, no computer, no kids. A great moment of stepping away from the chaos...I highly recommend it!
Like you, I find that I am multi-media all day long. Cell phone, laptop, TV, radio, iPod. (and add in my volunteer firefighter radio for good measure) I am continually surrounded by sound and visuals. When I come home from work (5:30ish) I play with my kids, help make dinner, clean up from dinner, give baths, etc. Though to an outside observer this may seem like complete kid chaos, it is the most relaxing time of my day. I am with my kids and I am "disconnected". Of course after 7:30 when they are asleep, what do I do. Log back on again....
